50 Years of the National Historic Preservation Act

2016 will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, the federal legislation establishing a structure to preserve historical and archaeological sites in the United States. This act created the National Register of Historic Places, the list of National Historic Landmarks, and the State Historic Preservation Offices.

During November’s National Trust Conference, a coalition of federal agencies, national preservations NGOs, and local and state groups participated in a session discussing current celebration planning and how to involve the public.
