Fire Island

In 2004, Gray & Pape was contracted by Vector Resources, Inc., to conduct an archeological overview and assessment of the Fire Island National Seashore. The national seashore encompasses approximately 26 miles of the 32-mile long barrier island located off the southern shore of Long Island, NY, The Fire Island National Seashore contains several components, including the detached William Floyd estate on the southern shore of Long Island and the Robert Moses State Park, located along the western end of the seashore.

The archeological overview and assessment completed by Gray & Pape included background research concerning known archeological resources and a walkover reconnaissance and visual inspection for each of the 13 previously identified archeological sites. During this inspection, locational data was obtained and entered into the National Park Service’s Archeological Site Management Information System. The work completed by Gray & Pape provides a template for the management and protection of the previously identified resources as well as any other sites identified in the future.
